Can AI Replace Public Relations Professionals?
Before delving into your question, allow me to elaborate on the essence of Public Relations (PR) and Artificial Intelligence in detail. In essence, PR entails fostering robust connections between a brand and its diverse stakeholders while diligently safeguarding its reputation. These stakeholders encompass a broad spectrum, ranging from clients/customers and suppliers to shareholders and communities.
To build a strong relationship with your stakeholders, the key is to listen and communicate effectively with the relevant parties. The reason I began with ‘listening’ as a great communication tool is because people usually assume that communication is mainly speaking but in my experience, I’ve found that to be to the contrary. It gives you better insight to listen more than you speak because then you can speak in detail with a tone that will best move your message across and incorporate what your audience wants into your speaking.
According to Tech Target, Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. Specific applications of AI include expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition and machine vision.
The popularity of AI is inspired by its remarkable capability to process vast volumes of data, seamlessly analysing this information to discern correlations and patterns.
By leveraging these patterns, AI systems can effectively predict future instances. For instance, a Chatbot exposed to various textual examples can adeptly generate realistic interactions with users, while an image recognition system, having scrutinized millions of instances, can proficiently identify and describe objects within images. More so, emerging generative AI techniques, continuously advancing at a rapid pace, can craft remarkably realistic text, images, music, and all sorts of other media.
In my opinion, AI cannot replace Public Relations Professionals because of the requisite human element in business. The personification of a business cannot be done by a bot. It has been tried before on websites where businesses add a bot to respond to customers. It becomes effective only when the customer is asking simple questions. When it comes to complex questions, there is a need for assistance from one person from the organisation.
