Can AI Replace Doctors?

Can AI Replace Doctors?

In films, we often depict robots diagnosing patients, recommending treatments, and conducting surgeries without any human assistance. While some may dismiss this as fiction, others believe it could become a reality in the near future. The medical AI industry is rapidly expanding and the question remains, when will robots take over the role of doctors.

The study evaluated the effectiveness of utilizing a computer program in aiding doctors in determining the success of cancer treatment.

157 patients with bladder cancer underwent CT scans before and after chemotherapy, and 17 doctors were asked to examine the scans and make a diagnosis both with and without the aid of the computer program. The results revealed that utilizing the program improved the accuracy of the doctors' diagnoses ??

Advanced technology requires skilled professionals to manage it

As digital health solutions become more advanced, there is an increased need for healthcare professionals with the necessary skills and qualifications to effectively utilize them. One example of such technology is the Vinci Surgical System, a robot equipped with a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and flexible instruments. While the robot offers significant benefits, surgeons will need to be trained to operate it, which will require practice and experience.

We Want Human Connection

Although technology has many benefits, it lacks the ability to show empathy. Building trust and being compassionate and responsive, making others feel understood, are essential aspects of trust. Therefore, entrusting a life-threatening decision to a robot or AI algorithm would be difficult, as they are not capable of these human qualities.

Where Will AI Help Doctors?

Providing Data to Make a Decision. IBM Watson is a tool that helps cancer doctors choose the best treatment options for patients by providing evidence-based suggestions. However, the final decision is left to the doctor and patient, as no computer program or robot can make complex decisions, they can only provide data. The interpretation of that data will always be up to humans.

Reduce Paperwork Pressure.

According to Justin Porter from the University of Chicago, medical professionals such as doctors, nurses, and staff are required to perform a variety of tedious, demanding, and repetitive tasks on a daily basis. Even if primary care physicians strictly adhered to nationally recommended guidelines for preventive, chronic disease, and acute care, it would still take them 26.7 hours per day to see an average number of patients. The research suggests that even with team-based care, the time required would still be excessive and overwhelming.

Supporting Clinical Decisions.

Effective results are achieved when people and technology work together, for example, by automating paperwork and using Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) for diagnoses.

A study in 2021 found that deep-learning-based breast cancer diagnosis is more accurate. It discussed various neural network methods used to detect and classify breast cancer, and their advantages and drawbacks, effectiveness, and areas for improvement. The study concluded that newer deep-learning network designs in breast cancer categorization will continue to be a significant area of research, and deep-learning-based models are less prone to produce inaccurate results.

Collaboration between AI and medical professionals can enhance decision-making.

The study is part of a project funded by the NIH, aimed at developing biomarker-based tools to support treatment response decisions for bladder cancer.

Despite advancements in AI and its potential in diagnostics, medical professions, including doctors, are difficult to fully replace with AI as the human body is highly complex and people prefer the personal touch of a doctor when unwell. AI-powered apps can replicate the role of GP in certain cases but are most useful when a human GP is not available.

Our inVerita team

AI and ML tools are like an extra set of eyes for doctors, but they can't replace a human touch. A team effort, led by professional clinicians and thoroughly tested, has been proven to be the best approach for patients.

AI can help doctors work more efficiently, make fewer mistakes, and streamline processes, often in the form of Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSs). Technology plays a big role in healthcare, and it can be used to improve patient outcomes.

By combining human problem-solving skills and creativity with the power of technology, we can provide the best results for patients.

This is well thought out. The administrative systems are tragically poor. A major Medicare insurer receives a client from CMS, who switched to a different insurer for 2022, but came back for 2023. The computer was never updated and refused to allow any input from a former customer. It took 2 hours to reach a human being, and only after demanding a manager was the current prescription able to be placed. It is impossible to file grievances with CMS unless they fit one of the choices on their inadequate tables. This isolates the people with the power to fix things and from the knowledge of where the problems are. CMS does issue star ratings, and has zero 5-star plans of many versions in many counties. In Santa Clara, only Kaiser, a non-profit insurer and service provider, is the only insurer with a 5-star rating. No one seems to care. A few insurers make excuses, others ignore the ratings.

Robots will never take the place of doctors. Doctors will treat patients with the help of robots, which are very helpful.
