I have a mixed reaction on this. I completely agree with the state of current systems, its close to impossible to deploy them in a practical setting. However, to reach that stage, a longer duration of expert-in-the-loop training across each segment of the therapist assistant "module" would be required. Being in this space for quite some time, I left the idea of an end-to-end therapistGPT long ago; we need modular-level stuff. That's only possible if we start tweaking our counseling practices to cater to the AI's requirements in the future (w/o compromising ethics at all levels). But the missing gaps you pointed out are really cool, and I am gonna use them in my ongoing research. I would be happy if we chat more and build more on top of it.

There is a very biased and pessimistic narrative about the intersection of AI and mental health. I have to disagree with this perspective and emphasize that AI can save lives by helping people with mental health and addiction issues. While therapists are currently the primary solution for individuals with lived experiences of mental health, we should also consider the potential of AI therapists with deep peer knowledge and understanding of these issues.
