Can AI Make Our Software Intuitive and Powerful?

One of my interviewees, a BIM expert, said he yearns for a BIM tool that would be so intuitive that even his grandmother could use it. Could AI make his wish come true?

The father of BIM calls for a rewrite

Dr. Jonathan Ingram, ‘the father of BIM,’?is critical of today's application of BIM technology.

“Basic BIM is really quite straightforward, but what has happened is that it has been added to and added to, and many modern BIM systems have become overengineered,” he said?in an interview?for International Construction.?

“BIM needs a good rewrite to bring it into the modern environment and to make it comprehensible, intuitive, and powerful.”

Ingram envisions a modern and straightforward?interface?that is web-based. He calls for a?cloud-based shared database?and a truly open system.

Ingram also sees great potential in using natural language as an interface.

Commanding with words

Architecture and engineering design are starting to resemble software development. To master BIM and parameterized design tools, you must think and act as a programmer. Some designers love it, while others see it as a diversion.

Thanks to the recent outburst of prompt-based AI, we're seeing a change in thought.

Hypar, a UK-based firm, develops a powerful web-based cloud platform that executes code to generate hundreds or thousands of designs based on design logic. They’ve now enabled natural language input in their tool.

You can, for example, write ‘2-story parking garage’ in a text box, and Hypar's tool will generate alternative designs (more in the?AEC Magazine article).

Are natural language interfaces the future?

Prompt-based interfaces will probably only replace menus partially.

Menus, checkboxes, and other selection tools can offer more precise control. An example of this is?Architectures, an AI-powered residential design tool. It has a list of parameters that you set to define the design requirements.

I expect voice or text-based natural language interfaces becoming popular, even among professional users. They will help designers but also make BIM and project management tools more accessible on jobsites. In any case, they will take the digitalization of the construction industry one step further.
