This week I joined AI experts Tom Head and Roy Murphy Murphy to discuss the AI landscape and some of the legal issues.??
With the anticipation of the incoming EU AI act and a few court cases taking place, we explored the key areas of existing UK law that could apply to AI including IP, privacy and data, bias and discrimination. It’s interesting to see how the US takes a more pro-innovation view, whilst we expect the UK government to take a ‘wait and see’ approach on the impact of the new EU AI legislation which is due in the next couple of months.?
A key talking point was around the source of data and how data is being used when it comes to training AI. This aspect has potential for significant risk, especially when you think about data scraping versus the basic principles of copyright law and data privacy. However, maintaining a transparent approach, with clear processes, data logs and clear governance can go some way to help protect your business. Not to mention the very important principle of asking for permission, not forgiveness in this area!??
