In the offline world, we say customer is the king but digital came up with a new leader called 'content'. We keep hearing this term of late that: The Content Is King!
I would say not anymore.
This new contender for the seat called as 'data' is changing the overall shape of conventional marketing!
More the data you have better the marketing you can do i.e. you can reach out to the perfectly suitable audiences through the right mediums.
One must be thinking, What data?
An example, whenever we sign up for a new app we have 2 options for registration.
1. Put mail id, contact number, address bla bla whatever is needed and sign in
Or
2. Login with Facebook
Since its easier and convenient, we select the 2nd option most of the times... log in with fb.
Here, we end up giving a lot more data to the app than what they were asking for. Login with Facebook gives them information about your friends, your likes-dislikes, interests, your school-collage, age-gender-geography, your workplace (if updated) & a lot more..
You have given him an access to enough of things now on the basis of which he can put you in buckets and show you the ads which are relevant to you. In other words, selling you products which you are likely to buy.
For an example, if you play games on mobile, you will be bombarded with a lot of gaming ads and to an extent FMCG Ads too because they have put you in a bucket of game lover in a particular age group with a certain taste in gaming
Or if you use a dating app, you will be shown ads of OYO rooms etc.. you know why! ;)
The new age technology has much beyond this. There are tools & softwares who can tell more about you like who are you married to, where do you travel the most, where do you spend most of your nights (even if it's not your registered address), your approximate income etc. without you saying anything about it.
That's kind of scary but that's how the marketers are operating these days and trust me it's gonna get way more complex & critical than this in coming days.
Data like this will act as tarot cards for digital marketers & they will make you buy products which they want you to buy.
Definitely, the battle for king’s chair is going to be tough!
I hope it gave you a glimpse of how digital marketing is evolving day by day..
