A New Benchmark in Financial Literacy and Career Exposure
March 28th marked a monumental day at St. John's University , where 800 high school students from 16 Queens South, New York, schools convened for a transformative experience. CampusCoin NYC 2024 wasn’t just an event; it was a beacon of financial literacy, entrepreneurial spirit, and career exploration.
Dr. Damion Kenwood, the NYC DOE Director of Student Services for the Queens South District, is the visionary force behind Campus Coin and its associated financial education program. With a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of education, Dr. Kenwood's innovative approach has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world financial literacy for students. His commitment to empowering the youth of Queens South through practical, hands-on learning experiences has not only set a new standard for financial education but also ignited a spark of entrepreneurial spirit among students. Dr. Kenwood's pioneering vision is shaping the future leaders of our community, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an ever-evolving financial landscape.
Empowerment Through Education and Exposure
This full-day affair was packed with learning, immersion, and competitive spirit, highlighted by a Shark Tank competition where the winning team secured $5,000. The day was enriched with insights from former NBA All-Stars, celebrated actors, and successful entrepreneurs. More than 40 volunteers from the financial, fintech, and entrepreneurial sectors facilitated breakout sessions, fostering invaluable networking opportunities for students with their peers and industry professionals.
Not a One-Off Event, But a Sustained Movement
CampusCoin NYC 2024 is part of an ambitious financial education pilot program launched in October last year across Queens South high schools. This ongoing initiative is special because it integrates financial education with direct exposure to the corporate world, effectively bringing careers into the classroom and forming financial literacy clubs in every participating school.
Bridging Gaps, Shaping Futures
Our holistic approach goes beyond textbook knowledge. By incorporating a mentor-matching component, we bring relatable role models into these students’ lives, making the leap from financial concepts to real-world applications seamless and impactful. This initiative aims not just to bridge the wealth gap but to address the opportunity gap head-on. We believe that visibility creates possibility.
