Campus Hiring going horribly wrong
What is going wrong in Campus Hiring ?
Look at the following news which is distressing.
Two of the biggest challenges in campus hiring is - Onboarding and Firing.
In a country where we have 15 lakh engineering graduates passing out each year, this is distressing.
with a bleak hiring scenario in 2023 these are the toughest times for a engineering graduate to get a job.
Delays in Onboarding -
Wipro gave job offers to some of the graduates in 2021 after clearing the tests and interviews. They were asked to do an un-paid internship of 2 months in 2022. Their onboarding was delayed onboarding indefinitely since June 2022. Post this, number of students had their offer letters revoked. The reasons behind this was unreasonable, ranging from low score in test (even after good scores) or incorrect verification.
One 2022 graduate who received his offer letter in November 2021, was told that if he completed Wipro’s Velocity training programme, he could go from Wipro’s Elite program, which pays Rs 3.5 lakh a year, to Turbo, which promises Rs 5.5 lakh a year and a Rs 1 lakh bonus.
And not just Wipro, many other mass recruiter companies did something similar along the lines affecting the lives of at least 100k freshers in India.
A similar theme is playing out at Tech Mahindra, where candidates who graduated as long ago as two years are still awaiting to be absorbed in jobs.
At Tech Mahindra, candidates who graduated in 2021 and 2022 are awaiting onboarding.
Firing after candidates fail in Tests
The second aspect is that of letting go fresh engineering graduates after they fail to clear tests conducted by the company.
Let us look at what is happening in Infosys and Wipro?
Infosys has sacked hundreds of fresher employees after they failed to clear the internal fresher assessment (FA) test
Sources claim that 600 employees have been terminated after failing the internal test. “Two weeks ago, 208 freshers were fired after failing the FA test. In total, around 600 freshers have been fired after failing the FA test in the past few months.”
The fired employees claim that failing the internal test did not result in termination for freshers who joined before July, 2022. A company representative claims that failing the internal test had always resulted in sackings.
This development comes on the backdrop of hundreds of freshers awaiting onboarding at the company for over 8 months after receiving an offer letter.
Two weeks ago, it is reported that IT services Wipro had laid off hundreds of employees after they failed the company's internal test. Sources allege that 800 freshers were sacked from Wipro while the company claimed that the terminations were limited to 452 people.

So what is going wrong ?
2. Gaps in skills
3. Wrong Campus Hiring techniques -?
What Next
2. Outsource the entire Graduate Engineering Trainee (GET) to professional companies who have expertise in skilling?
3. Identify candidates in 6th Semester and inculcate on campus training of the skills they need.?By signing MOUs with these Universities / Colleges they can impart training.?This will help companies reduce Corprate Training programs.?Students in VIII semester can be given project work.
While the road ahead is getting tougher i am sure companies will come out with solutions which will not impact careers of many promising Engineering Graduates.

1 年Most of the time, when the stepping stone stumbles, it puts the confidence at stake. Not just for the aspiring person, but for the hopes and dreams of a whole bunch of family associated is also at stake. Not to mention the efforts to put them on this pedestal in the background. Companies hiring should also own up to prepare the candidates towards what is expected. That will be a more philanthropic approach in building a stronger tommorrow. Else we will all fail as a system.
Hard-to-measure Competencies measured scientifically - The ONLY comprehensive competency assessment tool online
1 年One point out here is that most of the colleges and the companies focusing mostly on the technology. Technology is important but at the same the attitude / behavioural competencies are very very important to be productive in the job. most of the employees lack that results in this kind of scenarios. Right attitude and behavioural competencies will help a person to apply that technology in the best way. Different jobs need different set of behavioural competencies. for e.g., to be success in sales, we need competencies like, customer focus, negotiating skill, presentation skill etc. However, when it comes to s/f Developoment, these competencies will not have much use, instead they need competencies like trouble shooting, attention to details, systematic etc.. all these skills are not taught in colleges. it is purely the mind set of an individual. So the colleges / companies should give more important to critical competencies in each area.
