As the holidays approach and marketing campaigns planned months ahead reach full throttle, I’ve chosen to share what goes on inside a marketer’s mind, inspired by Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Understanding the brand, market, and audience is the foundation of all marketing strategies. Yet, marketers know that we inevitably bring our own personalities into every plan. Understanding these quirks, addressing our weaknesses, and leveraging our strengths is crucial to our success.

So, prepare yourself to be visited by three ghosts who will delve deeply into your marketer’s psyche. Perhaps, when morning comes, you’ll awaken with a newfound revelation to enhance your marketing strategies.

Ghost of Campaigns Past

When visited by the Ghost of Campaigns Past, you may feel haunted by regret—the decisions made that led to failures, and the missed opportunities that others turned into successes.

In my years as an international publisher, I would often remind my editors that they might carry the weight of rejecting titles that became massive successes (I have a few of those, some quite famous) or backing projects that ultimately disappointed (yes, I’ve had those too). But I also assured them that if they weren’t making mistakes, they weren’t trying hard enough. A marketer who never takes risks will inevitably become obsolete.

There is, however, release from this ghost, and it’s called experience. We make mistakes to grow; we learn to calculate risks, to set up mitigation strategies, and to implement crisis management. A marketer learns from the past but must never get stuck in it. Remember, no one pays us for what we have done, they pay for what we can do. Mistakes are inevitable but repeating them is unacceptable.

As you leave the past behind, don’t dwell on what went wrong; instead, ask how you can do better. Marketers must innovate and create, accepting their mistakes and forgiving themselves—but never forgetting. Recall, reflect, and improve. If you do this, the Ghost of Campaigns Past will become your ally.

Ghost of Campaigns Present

The Ghost of Campaigns Present is a tricky spirit, tormenting marketers with anxiety and uncertainty. Once a campaign is launched, and before an audience responses can be fully gauged, a natural fear creeps in. Did we plan enough? Is it resonating? Will it succeed? Some marketers cynically believe that once a campaign is launched, it’s out of their hands, taking on a life of its own. But nothing could be further from the truth, for in campaigns present, we are defined.

Fortunately, there is a powerful release from this haunting, and it is known as flexibility and adaptability. Marketers understand that unpredictable factors will impact even the most carefully crafted campaign, and we must be ready to adjust and respond to every twist. Good marketers can steer a plane in flight; great marketers take off in a plane but land a rocket.

The Ghost of Campaigns Present brings with it vast opportunities. The past tells us when we’re ready, but the present tells us we are worthy. When we plan, we have tools like analytics, experience, studies, and statistics. But when we are live in the market, working in real-time, we rely on our intuition, creativity, insight, and ingenuity. These are what allow us not just to react, but to thrive.

When haunted by the Ghost of Campaigns Present, remember it’s your chance to demonstrate your marketing greatness.

Ghost of Campaigns Future

At last, we meet the Ghost of Campaigns Future. In Dickens’ tale, this is the most ominous spirit, yet it need not be. This ghost may haunt us with doubt, as the future of marketing is often unpredictable and prone to sudden shifts. That’s why Carl Sagan’s quote holds such weight for us: “Extinction is the rule, survival the exception.” This is true for markets, brands, and marketers alike.

There’s an exercise I like to conduct with my teams: I have them research brands that have faded over time, examining how long they lasted and why they vanished. Each team lists a variety of causes, but the true reason is always the same failure to adapt. Evolution teaches us that survival depends on how quickly we adjust to overcome challenges. When we evolve, we emerge stronger and better positioned to endure.

Our future depends on how we’re preparing right now to survive, grow, and adapt, that is how we evolve. And most importantly, evolution comes from learning, growing, and adjusting, which is experience. Excellence doesn’t derive from how good we are, but from how effectively we apply our experiences to grow.

Marketers aren’t bound by time; rather, we are liberated by it. Great marketers aren’t born, they’re forged through experience, so time becomes an ally when it’s invested in growth. The Ghost of Campaigns Future isn’t a threat but an invitation.

Conclusion

In the world of marketing, the lessons of the past, the agility of the present, and the foresight of the future converge to shape us into better strategists and leaders. As we reflect on these "campaign ghosts," let us learn from our missteps, trust our instincts, and remain open to change—because our growth depends on it. Embrace these insights, let them fuel your creativity, and remember: every campaign is an opportunity to evolve.

Now, let’s keep this conversation alive. What insights resonate with you most? Share your thoughts, spread the wisdom, and invite others to join the dialogue. Together, let’s build a future where each campaign leaves a lasting impact. #NoMercyMarketing
