Cambridge Analytica may be raided, self-driving Uber kills pedestrian, and more trending news

A warrant is being sought to raid Cambridge Analytica’s UK headquarters amid fresh allegations of misconduct. Britain's information commissioner Elizabeth Denham said she was seeking a warrant to seize the firm’s servers and determine whether it used Facebook data without users’ permission to influence the US 2016 presidential election. Facebook’s shares tanked on Monday, wiping $36.7bn off market value (paywall), although that was part of a broader market slump as well. Channel 4 showed last night a covertly filmed meeting where the chief executive purportedly offered to entrap politicians by secretly filming them with “very beautiful” women.

An American woman died last night after being hit by one of Uber’s self-driving cars, in what’s believed to be the first known death from an autonomous vehicle. The car was in autonomous mode with a human safety driver at the wheel when it struck the woman crossing the street, outside of a pedestrian crossing, in Tempe, Arizona. Tempe Police Chief Sylvia Moir says the ride-hailing company was likely not at fault. Uber suspended testing of its self-driving cars in the US and Canada following the incident.

Markets reacted favourably to the Brexit transition deal with the pound jumping more than 1% yesterday. Dutch bank ING described the pound’s highest price for a month as “some of the short-term pessimism being re-priced out”. The pound’s performance, however, pushed the FTSE 100 to a 15-month low – as many constituent companies like Glencore and Anglo American generate revenue overseas and thus do not benefit from a strong pound. The Confederation of British Industry called the deal a “breakthrough” and the British Chambers of Commerce said it was a “milestone agreement”.

Rogue bosses who put the pensions of their workers at risk will face fines or prosecution under new rules to be unveiled by the government. This follows the recent collapses of construction giant Carillion and retailer BHS, which left large unfunded pension gaps. The government wants to be able to claw back money to pay workers and suppliers and reverse “asset stripping” – fire sales of a company’s valuable assets just before it goes bust. Directors would also be held personally liable if found to have acted “recklessly”.

Five new medical schools will open in the next two years to fill NHS doctor staffing gaps. The government has favored underserved areas with courses starting over the next three years in Sunderland, Lancashire, Lincoln, Canterbury and Chelmsford. Health secretary Jeremy Hunt promised 1,500 new places, “which will help us deal with the challenges of having around 1 million more over-75s in 10 years”.

Idea of the Day: Are you ready for a career change? Before you take the leap, it’s important to evaluate what’s driving the desire for change, advises entrepreneur and Hamilton Bradshaw CEO James Caan.

“I’ve heard a lot of candidates tell me they’re desperate for a career change, but when it comes to it, all they’re really searching for is to be more valued in their current role.”
