Cambashi Industry Newsletter Q1, 2024

For 40 years Cambashi has been observing the relationship between economic ‘value added’ in key industries and the level of software sales into them. In most manufacturing sectors, our research shows that technical software growth to those industries consistently outperforms the economic performance of the industries themselves. Consequently, industries are spending an ever-increasing proportion of their revenue on manufacturing software. This trend underscores the pivotal role of manufacturing software in enhancing operational efficiency, facilitating streamlined design processes, minimizing errors through simulation, and optimizing factory production processes.

The chart above shows how Manufacturing Software sales to selected industries have fared in recent years as economic conditions have changed, and our forecast to 2027. With each industry being affected in different ways by the COVID-19 pandemic, recovery, and recent economic challenges. To investigate these differences individually, we invite you to explore Cambashi’s Industry Insights platform, offering a 60-day free trial period. We have just added a new Marketing Intelligence section with online access to econometric data, engineering software spend and employment by occupation data. Our platform, trusted by over 3,100 professionals, has an impressive user rating of 4.8 stars out of 5.

The current growth in manufacturing software stems from several key areas. Firstly, providers are expanding their portfolios to meet the evolving needs of customers, particularly as simulation becomes essential in addressing complex problems across industries, in areas such as Electro-Magnetic, Fluids (CFD), and Multi-Physics. Simulation allows designers to efficiently test various design iterations, reducing reliance on physical prototypes. This approach not only leads to cost savings during development but also accelerates product time-to-market and mitigates potential issues in the final design.

The recent update of Cambashi`s Product / Country / Industry Engineering Software Database shows that the Manufacturing Computer Aided Technologies (CAx) and PLM market landscape in 2023 reveals significant dominance by key players. For instance, renowned for its comprehensive suite spanning CAD, PLM, and CAE, 达索系统 flagship products like CATIA and ENOVIA find widespread adoption in industries such as automotive and aerospace. Another key player is Siemens Digital Industries Software , with offerings like NX and TeamCenter. Siemens facilitates digital transformation across diverse sectors, from consumer goods to aerospace. Ansys also secures a notable market share, despite facing challenges such as export restrictions impacting its growth trajectory, especially in China. 欧特克 subscription-based model and strategic acquisitions, including FlexSim, bolster its position, while 美国参数技术公司 transition to subscriptions and acquisitions like Onshape and Arena underscore its upward trajectory. With leadership transitions and evolving strategies, these top providers navigate dynamic market forces to drive innovation and meet evolving customer needs.

Additionally, our Employment database contains detailed information on potential user communities by occupation, industry and country, providing valuable insights into market opportunities.

Speaking of market opportunities, there's significant potential for growth by providing software aimed at improving productivity in less-technical occupations, such as skilled tradespeople, managers and supervisors.

While traditional engineering software tools have catered for the 17 million architects and designers worldwide, and newer capabilities have enabled the 63 million engineers and engineering technicians to refine product specifications, there are many occupations engaged in supporting the delivery of engineering programs that have been less well served. Digital transformation is opening up new opportunities for engineering software tools to support decision-making among managers/supervisors and improve the information flow for frontline workers like the 816 million skilled tradespeople and machine operators. It will likely require new types of solutions, such as visualization and augmented reality, giving them access to and the ability to interact with 3D design models more easily.

Our Cambashi Employment database contains detailed information on the size of potential user communities, segmented by occupation, industry, and country. Feel free to request the February release sample.

Moving on, we have just added a new segment "BIM Data Management" to our recent BIM Observatory release. The top 10 providers of BIM Data Management captured over 85% ($1.5 billion) of the global market in 2023. Some of these leaders, with roots in design, are transitioning towards comprehensive, data-centric solutions across the BIM lifecycle. Trimble Inc. and 甲骨文 , with deep ties to the construction sector, also feature prominently, showcasing the blurred lines between data management and core process support.

Procore Technologies stands out among the fastest-growing BIM vendors, particularly in supporting the Construct phase of the BIM cycle, underpinned by a robust data management platform. Despite challenges posed by a recent downturn in China's real estate sector, major players like Glodon Company Limited maintain a significant market share, reflecting the sector's limited presence of niche providers. With fewer than 50 vendors contributing to approximately 15% of the market, this landscape contrasts sharply with the design sector's multitude of small vendors, suggesting a market primarily influenced by established players and possibly a prevalence of generic or in-house solutions.

The Cambashi BIM Observatory covers the entire market for BIM.
