New guidance for carbon credit users
SBTi announced new BVCM guidance
A key to understanding the new BVCM guidance is to focus on its two goals – delivering near-term mitigation, and driving finance to scale up climate solutions and enable activities to “unlock the systemic transformation needed to achieve net zero by mid-century globally.” We break down what these goals mean for companies and how carbon credit ratings can help support alignment with the new guidance. Closing thoughts?
Seeing recent efforts to reshape the VCM into a more reliable, fair and effective tool for achieving net-zero emissions is highly encouraging. For instance, having new guidance on climate “contribution” claims (versus offsetting, or compensation, claims) supports a more diverse market. This creates new opportunities in the so-called “VCM 2.0” for projects that mitigate greenhouse gases while also contributing significantly to society and sustainable development, which are often located in regions where the effects of climate change are deeply felt and where development finance is most needed. ? We particularly celebrate the commitment shown in the Oxford Offsetting Principles to ensure projects' and credits' have “social and environmental” integrity. Revised and improved GHG accounting methodologies are welcome, but the market should not allow projects that cause undue harm to people or the environment. Such projects with negative consequences will affect all of us at the end of the day.? At Calyx Global we constantly emphasize our belief that high-quality credits involve creating net positive impacts – not only for the climate, but also for local communities, biodiversity and the environment. But, this isn't just a slogan. It's at the core of our dedication to achieving a just transition to net zero – one that prioritizes high-integrity claims, ensures no harm and leaves no one behind. ?
