Calm in the Chaos: Day #9

Finding a sense of ‘purpose’ in life not only makes it feel more meaningful but it can help when life throws the chaos at you. It can help throw some perspective on everything going on around you and create a healthy focus for your mind. 

To some people a sense of purpose comes easily at a young age, for others it can be much later in life (and it can change throughout your life). There’s no right or wrong and its never too late!

I have always searched for purpose in my life (I didn’t know that’s what I was doing at the time) and this is reflected in my career path which is extremely well rounded as I continued to explore and refine what it was that really lit up my soul. For me, it’s supporting people to become the best version of themselves. It always has been, since managing my first team member nearly 20 years ago. It’s just taken me a while to realise it! 

Some things to think about, to help you identify your purpose:

1. Give yourself some time and space to think about it.

2. Get really clear about the things you love to do – not just at work but in life

3. What comes naturally to you? What are you good at?

4. What are your “Values” in life? Identify your top 3-5 and think about how you can live more aligned to them

5. Talk to other people – have conversations about it, it can help to generate ideas and think of things you wouldn’t have alone.

Your purpose doesn’t have to be about your career or how you make a living. It can be about how you choose to spend your spare time or ‘give back’. 

A lot of clients that I work with are searching for that sense of purpose (but often they don’t realise it – they just know they feel ‘stuck’). We work together on getting really clear on the answers to the questions above. Once they have that clarity, it’s about creating an action plan to get them there and then I provide support along the way to help with the drive to make it happen. That’s my purpose and I blooming love it!
