The Calm Before The Storm

The Calm Before The Storm

Right now, people aren’t dying around us and so the advice from government may feel excessive. A storm in a teacup? No! It’s actually the calm before the storm. Please try to visualise what’s coming in a few weeks and realise that the decisions you take today will affect it.

The official statistics tell us that in the UK there are just 5,700 cases and 281 deaths. But we’re not testing people and it takes perhaps 5 days to show any symptoms. In reality, it’s likely to be about 100,000 people infected already in the UK and it might be more given the behaviour in the last few days.

If you go out to a busy place you might infect 2 people today, who could infect 4 people tomorrow, who could infect 8 people on Weds, 16 on Thursday, 32 on Friday, 64 on Saturday, that’s a total of 127 people infected by next weekend, originating from you because you couldn’t control yourself. If everyone behaves like that, there would be millions infected by next Saturday and from those people, tens of thousands will die because the NHS can’t handle that many. Of course, it won’t happen at that rate because the majority are behaving responsibly. However, this WILL happen in 4-6 weeks unless EVERYONE behaves responsibly now.

Visualise 100,000 dead people and how you will feel knowing that you are responsible for some of them.

That’s why you have to make the right decisions today. You might be infected or you might get infected today by someone else and infect others tomorrow.

STAY HOME UNLESS ITS ESSENTIAL.

RESIST TEMPTATION.

AVOID PEOPLE.

The food supply chain is fine, don’t panic, there is plenty of food and the supermarkets have doubled capacity in the last few weeks. The shelves are only bare because of panic buying and once it stops they will quickly become stocked again.

When you shop, buy a basket of stuff to last you a week, so that you don’t have to go back again but don’t put anything in that trolley that you won’t need to get through the week.

Don’t order stuff online that isn’t essential, the delivery capacity is needed for important stuff.

Great article, we are lucky to have the ability to self isolate and survive, I support an organisation in Zimbabwe called Kufema Zimbabwe, a global group of dedicated volunteers trying to make a difference in Zimbabwe, there people will starve if they stay home x
