The Calm Before, During, and After the Storm- Leadership 101

When thinking about a strong leader, what comes to mind? Many would say emotional intelligence and being able to stay calm under pressure. A leader with subject matter expertise, passion and energy to make things happen is important of course, but even more important is knowing that when a crisis comes along, a leader will take decisive action in a calm, intentional and professional manner. The ability to remain calm and objective, regardless of the situation, demonstrates strength. Think about the best leader/boss you have ever had- and if you have them now, congratulations! Remember to thank them!

• How did you know they cared?
• Did they lead with calmness in challenging times?

There are many ways to be an effective leader who remains calm in every situation. This is important for a few reasons, many of which create the foundation for strong relationships and business results. Calmness creates trust. Trust creates openness. Openness is synonymous with transparency. Transparency produces healthy dialogue. Healthy dialogue inspires motivation to succeed. Succeeding delivers results, increases engagement and demonstrates the true effect of strong leadership- one who remains calm even during challenges.

If you are in a position of leadership, remember that all eyes are on you. When things are going well, your team is watching. When things go awry, your team is watching. Be the calm before, during and after the storm.
