The Calls That Shaped Me: Lessons in Leadership, Faith, and Legacy
Growing up, my father had a circle of close friends who would often call our home, and I eagerly awaited the chance to answer the phone. Little did I know then, those moments were not just about answering calls but were intentional lessons in communication and connection, curated by my parents. Among those callers, two individuals stood out—Mr. Tom Graham and Mr. Monty Bernie—whose impact on my father's life and my own remains profound to this day.
Mr. Graham, a former Denver Broncos player, played a pivotal role in my father's life when he was just 17, on the brink of a troubled path. Mr. Graham’s mentorship led my father to embrace faith and set him on a new trajectory toward positivity and leadership. Throughout my childhood, his calls weren’t just about checking in on my dad; he took the time to connect with me, showing genuine interest in our conversations and leaving a lasting impression of wisdom and humor.
I vividly recall visiting Mr. Graham’s home, a place where laughter and celebration were abundant. His ability to disciple my father and extend mentorship to me, like taking us to see The Lion King while singing every word to Kenny Rogers songs in his car, exemplified his warmth and inclusivity. His legacy as a family man and community leader was evident in the packed attendance at his funeral, a testament to the lives he touched with his humility and wisdom.
Similarly impactful was Mr. Bernie, a white farmer from Nebraska, whose dedication to hard work and faith left an indelible mark on my upbringing. Visiting his farm, I learned firsthand the values of perseverance and stewardship, waking up at 4 a.m. to watch him and his wife head out to milk cows. Despite our differences, Mr. Bernie’s calls were always about more than farming; he cared deeply about my friendships and emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people.
One of the most defining moments of my faith came because of Mr. Bernie. I had planned in the 5th grade for my birthday party down to every detail, filled with big ideas and a vision for celebration. However, at the time, my father was raising his own financial support as a chaplain in an inner-city clinic. He sat me down and gently told me he didn’t have the money to make my vision a reality. Without hesitation, I looked at him and said, “God is going to provide it.” Days later, my father opened the mail to find a $500 check from Mr. Bernie—completely unexpected and specifically sent for my birthday, even though he had no idea about the need. From that moment on, my faith never wavered—for myself or for others.
Both Mr. Graham and Mr. Bernie (both of whom have passed on), embodied qualities of leadership, character, and integrity that shaped not only my father’s journey but also my own path as a mother and woman of faith. Their influence underscores the profound impact that genuine mentorship and community can have across generations.
Reflecting on these experiences, I am reminded of a book by my pastor at Hope City Church Colorado, titled Life is Like Sports. This concept resonates deeply, as I consider how Mr. Graham, a football legend turned faith leader, and Mr. Bernie, a humble farmer, exemplified life’s lessons through their actions and words.Their legacies remind us that true leadership transcends professions; it resides in the hearts and actions of those who choose to uplift others. I invite you to explore Life is Like Sports by my pastor, a testament to the transformative power of leadership grounded in faith and integrity.
As I navigate my role in leading Mahogany Mothers Circle, a journey that required more than just determination but also the right influences from my childhood, I am filled with heartfelt gratitude. In a powerful moment of affirmation, my pastor took the time to pray over Mahogany Mothers Circle, recognizing its mission and purpose. That blessing was a reminder that this work is bigger than me—it’s a calling rooted in faith, legacy, and the power of community.

3 周Beautiful reflection of the ripples we create in the lives of others. We aren't always aware of the impact we have on the lives of others. As a person who has been positively influenced by you and several members of your family it's especially meaningful. These men had no idea the hundreds if not thousands of lives they impacted through their mentorship of one young man. Who know how many lives we touch when giving our time, care and attention to one person.
Marpessa Allen, it's inspiring to see how mentorship truly forges character and growth. building community is vital! #leadershipinsights
