The Calling: “Time to Change OR Continue…..”

“Ravi a 36 Years old man was going through a rough time in his life. He had lost all interest in his current job. Every morning his journey from his home to workplace was making him think time and again just one thought “It’s time for a Job Change”. He tried overcoming this by not performing, just loitering around in office and day dreaming during shift hours till he was getting his next interview pipelined.” All of us at some point or other had the same viral fever which was catching us robustly or being spread from someone else to us and we so easily decided healing this fever with a regular dose of RESIGNATION or JOB CHANGE. Was it really required or could it really have been cured with some other simple exercises with our selves before we concluded quitting all.

This article intends not just to build up a framework of why a change but also to identify and deal with the triggers we all have been fighting in our careers occasionally or may be regularly. Following could act as those quick checkpoints to answer your own calling before you get in this pitfall or may be a new land of opportunities.

1. Unhealthy Arguments: One of the major causes of the calling or that paining nerve which most of us experience. Yes, dear readers if in last one month you had more than 3 unhealthy arguments with your boss and he/she is genuinely trying to grow you and share the favorable & hard fact of just being competent enough to play your role well, than it should not bother you to build the thought which you are actually doing.

2. My Learning’s: Did I really learn anything new in last 6 months? How much do we measure or even question to our own selves on the learning’s we have compiled in our professional journey. It can act as one of the most important checkpoints before any budding thought.

3. My visible growth: After creating a right mix of knowledge, skills and attitude if still you don’t get any promotion, role addition/enhancement or an increase and it is happening for all others. Then the trigger is quite positive and a change might be quite recommended too.

4. Validating Visible Growth: If you are not able to witness #3 “My visible growth” and still your competencies are being acknowledged in market with more lucrative offers then it’s time to think it out strongly.

5. Comparison: One word which has been glued with us for a while and we have been living it up so well from our childhood is matching or comparing. And a lot of time this healthy comparison really helps us out to make it just as high as we always fantasized. So if 50% of your batch mates are growing faster than you then the thought is just right and it needs to be fed well.

While researching, analyzing and paraphrasing this article a must check out on thoughts with Industry experts made me consult with Mr. Prabir Jha one of the most seasoned HR Leaders in our country on his say to the subject and it goes like: “Shift jobs for more strategic reasons - new experience, fresh learning’s, for acquiring or improving a target competency- than for a pure tactical one like salary and designation.”

And “The Calling: Time to Change OR Continue…..” could be truly answered by you: what you want, are you moving in right direction, are you growing your competencies or just standing still and allowing the world to walk ahead of you and therefore creating the clear vision of your goals to a more blurred one.

Great post shared Monica Swamy. Our generation is known for job-hopping, however frequent job changes are not bad if the scope of learning and improvement diminishes with time.
