Calling Out The Biggest Networking BS

Calling Out The Biggest Networking BS

The world often paints introverts with a brush dipped in labels like unsociable, shy, or even anti-social. It's time to shatter these stereotypes and unveil the power that introverts bring to the table, especially when it comes to networking.

Carl Jung, the eminent psychotherapist, wisely pointed out that there's no such thing as a pure introvert or extrovert. It's a spectrum, and we all fall somewhere in between. It's crucial to break free from the rigid categories we've created and respect the natural disposition of ourselves and others.

So, introverts, this is your call to arms.?

Embrace your inherent qualities. Stop pretending to be someone you're not. Your calm, measured, and thoughtful approach is not a weakness; it's a strength. Own your preference for solitude; revel in your ability to develop ideas independently. It's perfectly fine to decline that social invitation proudly, free from the clutches of FOMO. Understand the unique value you bring to thinking, debate, conversation, and idea generation.

And to the extroverts out there, don't overlook the introverts in the room. Dive into their comfort zone; appreciate their measured pace. They might add dimensions to your insights that you've never considered. Gandhi, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates — these renowned introverts changed the world by embracing their unique strengths.

Think of Douglas Conant, who, as CEO of Campbell’s Soup, transformed the company culture by walking the talk and writing over 30,000 handwritten letters. Introverts, when given the space and encouragement, can bring about profound change.

Whether introverted or extroverted, diversity in thinking is what sparks innovation. So, embrace the differences, honour the diversity of approaches, and, most importantly, embrace yourself.

Now, let's debunk the myth that introverts can't be stellar networkers.?

Here's a secret: I'm a massive introvert. I relish my alone time, generating energy in solitude, preferring deep listening to speaking, and smaller groups to larger ones. And yes, despite the irony, I speak in large rooms and network with hundreds.?

Here are just 5 qualities that make introverts phenomenal networkers:

  1. Introverts often have a deep interest in others, making them exceptional listeners. They genuinely want to hear others' stories and perspectives. This skill transforms surface-level interactions into meaningful connections.
  2. Natural curiosity is an introvert's forte. They engage others by asking questions and lots of them. They are awesome at fostering meaningful conversations.
  3. Introverts remember details about others - and often for a long time. No doubt as a result of (1) and (2) above.
  4. Introverts are often keen observers, catching nuances and unsaid messages that might escape others.
  5. Introverts forge connections on a profound level, seeing beyond titles and names to understand the human standing in front of them.

If you see yourself as an introvert, then now is your time to step-up and cherish the natural skills you have for creating transformational connections. Embrace it, own it, and watch how your introverted energy can create waves in places you never thought possible.

Love it! I too wrote about networking for the reluctantly social in my newsletter this week. I suspect it may be top of mind since it's that time of year when we are all getting out amongst it!
