Calling Innovators: Help us shape the UK's net zero energy future

The inaugural Energy Innovation Basecamp saw key players from across the energy sector get together to tackle the biggest obstacles standing in the way of delivering a net zero energy system.

The session, which was held in Birmingham in February, was the first in a series of events which are bringing together? Ofgem ,? Energy Networks Association (ENA) ,? Innovate UK and electricity and gas networks from across the country to gain insights from innovators on how we can deliver a net zero power system by 2035.

It was a great opportunity to discuss the solutions we need to tackle these issues - but the challenge doesn’t stop there!

We put forward four challenges at the event, ?and we’d love to hear your thoughts on the topics we’ve raised. Visit the links below to learn more.

We’d like to develop a digital platform which will create a more efficient consent process, reducing the time and cost for everyone involved. Our aim is to have a portal where customers can consent to work on their land and, when required, also let their neighbours consent to the work being undertaken on adjacent land.

We’re looking for a way to release all the data contained in wayleaves to improve the efficiency of our operations. This streamlined approach to wayleave renewal will allow for better communication with landowners when assets need to be replaced or refurbished.

At the moment, DNOs visually inspect overhead lines to ensure no vegetation is within the specified vicinity of their key infrastructure. But is there a way we can harness new technologies to safely and efficiently identify tree species and their proximity to overhead lines?

We’re also looking to understand the impact climate change will have on different tree species, ?to develop a predictive model for vegetation growth which will provide a better targeted vegetation management programme.

We’re looking to identify nature-based solutions which would deliver flood mitigation in a more sustainable way – with additional biodiversity benefits, while also providing flood protection for the surrounding landscape (not just our substations). As our sites are varied in type, location and environment, a number of different options may need to be considered.

Have an idea that will help us deliver the net zero energy network? If so, we want to hear from you.

We’re looking for a wide range of perspectives, experiences and expertise to help us understand what the setbacks and obstacles have been so far in developing, delivering and embedding innovations.
