Calling an Auditable
Is language quantifiable? My career as a data analyst and auditor began with the assumption that it is. I worked to bring 300,000 minority language speakers a report their community needed to develop schools and programs to maintain their unique identity. It taught me the fundamentals of detailed research, but more importantly it taught me the value of participatory methods.?
Financial audit is a fundamental building block of the trust we have in our companies. I joined the global leader for financial audit to learn and build that vision. In my short term there I successfully:
I ultimately decided that a CPA would not be the most effective designation (although I did get my C)PEH, and after a successful busy season I moved on from the firm.
Several years ago I had the privilege to attend a United Nations development conference as a youth delegate. I saw first hand the difficulties of global governance, climate change is not easy to solve, especially with conventional governance models. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing this generation. Not purely because of the environmental challenge, but because of the complexity of governance involved with a global challenge. I launched a tech company to try and solve the underlying audit inefficiency behind climate solutions. We won awards and built an app in record time; but the timing wasn’t right.?
To develop an understanding of governance first-hand, I am on two boards. One is an operational board (PMAST). The other is Governance-focused and it oversees the delivery of? audit services to over 150 organizations. I briefly ran for city council on a data-driven platform, and am synthesizing my experiences for an upcoming TedX talk. Yes the world is becoming more complex, but the problems it creates are solvable. Language is often the first step, one which I’ve been perfecting with presentations to global scientific communities, artificial intelligence engineers and neuroscientists.?
One of my observations from 5+ years in the field of social entrepreneurship is the importance of audit. The line between nonprofit and for-profit is blurring. Companies are more obligated to have a social mandate, and nonprofits are pressured to create business viability. For most people audit isn’t sexy; but I see it as a dynamic dance between quantitative and qualitative information. Games are the ultimate form of storytelling that integrate story and score, and something I believe will play an increasing role in how we organize the world. It’s a thrill to work with a variety of businesses in my job, and help them develop plans to manage complex information.
