Just in case you haven't heard by now, we are hosting our annual conference - SurgTech 2024 at the Leeds Marriott Hotel on the 21st and 22nd March 2024.
Our theme this year is "Innovating Across the Surgical Pathway" and this reflects the ambitions of the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) in Accelerated Surgical Care which starts on the 1st April 2024. As the NIHR Surgical MedTech Co-operative (Surgical MIC) comes to an end on the 31st March 2024 and is replaced by the HRC, this event reflect on the successes of the Surgical MIC, what we've learnt and how we want to build on these lessons in the HRC.
So what can you expect on Day 2 - Friday, 22nd March 2024
Regulations, standards and intellectual property?
The NIHR HRCs will be expected to use their extensive knowledge of the innovation pipeline to primarily support industry partners navigate the health and care landscape, including the regulatory requirements for market access to increase the chance of adoption.
You will hear talks from Graeme Howling Head of Innovation at Medipex Ltd on Intellectual Property and Protecting Your Innovation, Richard Hall Director at QMS Consultancy Ltd on the Medical Device Regulations, Stuart Angell (mTOPRA) Regulatory Affairs Programme Manager at BIVDA on the IVD Regulations, Rob Turpin Head of Sector (Healthcare) and Emma Glass University Partnerships Manager for Healthcare Technologies?for 英国标准协会 on Navigating BSI Standards, and Andy McKinlay Partner – European Patent Attorney at Page White Farrer on managing intellectual property related to artificial intelligence.
This will be followed by a panel discussion.
Panel Discussion: MedTech start-ups: Regulatory strategy to ensure UK and EU market access.?
The speakers from the session on Regulations, Standards and Intellectual Property will be joined by Rich Shaw from Pd-m , Jacqueline van Druten (MICR.CIM.RD) from CLIN-r+ , Mattia Scalabrin (PhD) from University of Leeds.
This session will be chaired by Tom Clutton-Brock MBE, Chair of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s (MHRA) Interim Devices Working Group, Director of Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre and Clinical Director for the NIHR HRC for Devices, Digital and Robotics.
The Interim Devices Working Group will provide independent, external expert input and advice on the safety, performance, benefits and risks of devices in use in the United Kingdom healthcare system, prior to the launch of the statutory committee under the Medicines and Medical Devices Act 2021.
This will be followed by breakout sessions and then you will be fed a wholesome lunch by Leeds Marriott Hotel and you will have an opportunity to interact with exhibitors, and innovators who will later provide you with an opportunity to touch and play around with their technology.

Technology Showcase
After lunch, we have companies that will showcase their technologies to you. These technologies will be listed in a separate article.
One example of a showcase technology is the Edison System - we facilitated clinical evaluation in the UK, which supported the FDA application. This technology has also been selected for the Innovative Devices Access Pathway (IDAP) pilot designed to accelerate the development of innovative medical devices that meet an unmet clinical need in the NHS and support their integration into the UK market.

The speakers from the adoption and commercialisation session will be joined by Helen Hoyland Head of Commercial Innovation and Growth Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber and Moninder Bhogal Business Development and Innovation Manager Innovation Pop Up .
This session will be moderated by Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber
