Call for Submissions to an Edited book on “The After-Effects of the New Jim Crow”
My colleague, Dr. Elijah Ward, and I are editing a book with the above tentative title that will explore the consequences experienced by African American men and women who have been incarcerated. It will especially focus on stigmatizing and limiting effects that persist even long after a returning citizen has fulfilled society’s requirement for re-entry and has supposedly “paid their dues”.
Each chapter in the book will be a brief narrative written by a man or woman who has been incarcerated and has later attained a certain level of success in their life, in their own terms. The narratives will serve as case studies of the project, which will identify and discuss common and uncommon themes among the stories.
This book will examine some of the follow-up implications, in the lives of previously-incarcerated incarcerated African Americans, that are alluded to in Michelle Alexander’s book, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness”.
Keywords: mass incarceration, re-entry, African Americans, post-incarceration, stigma
Narrative submissions should be between 2,000 and 3,000 words and should be emailed, as an attachment, to [email protected]. The narrative should discuss the individual’s life before, during and after incarceration, with at least some emphasis on the after-effects of incarceration in terms of how the individual is treated by society. Individuals making submissions should include (in the email) their address, contact details and a short biography of 250-300 words.
