Call me crazy, but who wouldn't want to try seeing the future.

Who knows what these guys could really see.
It seems pretty likely they studied the Sutras, went deep into their spiritual journey and came to the conclusion that all of the information in the universe is stored somehow and can be accessed.
Actually, that's pretty consistent with the current understanding of the universe according to modern quantum physics.
Seriously, WTH, quantum physics pretty much just confirmed that something like the Akashic Records is real.
Oh, and physics doesn't just indicate there's a record of our past, the Theorem also makes clear that no, new information can be created. This means that in some form or another, the future already exists.
Sure, this doesn't suggest we know how to 'read' the Akashic Records. And, even we could access them somehow, would we even understand what we are experiencing?
In fact, the Yoga Sutras provide a pretty clear path to accessing the Spiritual Realm which contains stuff like the Akashic Records. By practicing and developing concentration, contemplation and absorption (frequently called by different names) you crack open the third eye and start to get direct spiritual experience.
I do believe we can directly experience future possibilities and even identify unknown forces coming into our lives through the practice of Yoga. Deciphering and understanding those spiritual experiences leads to knowledge. And, also humility, knowing how little of this we can really understand on our lifetime.
