Call for Manuscripts: The Journal of Higher Education Management
Special Thematic Issue?– “The Academic Department
Chairperson: Challenges, Lessons, and Rewards”
Dan L. King, Ed.D., Editor
?The Journal of Higher Education Management (JHEM) is an online periodical published by the American Association of University Administrators (AAUA).?It is an open-source publication, freely available on the AAUA website. JHEM is a blind-reviewed selective journal, with a four-year selectivity index of less than 45 percent of submitted manuscripts.
?You may view the latest issue of JHEM online at:?https://issuu.com/aaua10/docs/jhem_38_2_2023_
?We are now planning the publication of a special issue thematic issue:?“The Academic Department Chairperson: Challenges, Lessons, and Rewards.”
Although not intended to be prescriptive or delimiting, manuscripts might address any one or more of the following questions: What are the challenges/rewards of serving as an academic department chairperson??Can/should the chair’s role be seen as a career-position, or is it better viewed as a temporary responsibility??Are there especially troublesome tasks associated with the chair’s role, and are there examples of successfully addressing said tasks??To what extent and under what conditions is the academic department chair called upon to hold an institution-wide perspective and provide internal institution-wide leadership on challenging issues??Is there (should there be) some form of professional preparation for the academic department chairperson, and what type of ongoing professional development (if any) should be provided??Interested authors should not feel constrained by these illustrative questions. We are interested in good manuscripts that focus on the stated theme, either broadly or in a targeted manner.
?For those who are less familiar with the journal, the purpose of JHEM is to promote and strengthen the profession of college and university administration. The Journal provides a forum for: (a) a discussion of the current issues, problems and challenges facing higher education; (b) an exchange of practical wisdom and techniques in the areas of higher education leadership, policy analysis and development, and institutional management; and (c) the identification and explication of the principles and standards of college and university administration.
?Manuscripts should be written for the college or university administrator who has the general responsibilities of educational leadership, policy analysis, staff development, and/or institutional management.?Practical as well as scholarly-oriented submissions are welcome.?Only original manuscripts that are not under consideration by another journal or which have not been published elsewhere are considered.
