The Call For Localized Power Grids From Kashim Shettima By Odiawa Ai

In the face of Nigeria's pressing governance challenges, the call for the decentralization of power continues to gain momentum. Recently, the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) convened with the National Council of Traditional Rulers (NCTR) to discuss the vital role that traditional leaders and local communities can play in addressing the nation’s security issues. This dialogue underscores a broader recognition of the need for localized governance structures to effectively tackle the multifaceted crises facing Nigeria today.

One of the most critical areas where decentralization is urgently needed is the power sector. Vice President Kashim Shettima has become a prominent advocate for the swift implementation of localized power grids in response to the ongoing failures of the national electricity system. Nigeria, with a population of approximately 230 million, currently operates on a national grid that has an optimal capacity of merely 4,500 megawatts. This stark reality places Nigeria among the countries with the most unstable power grids globally, severely impacting economic growth and daily life.

The statistics surrounding the national grid's reliability are alarming. During the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023, the national grid experienced an unprecedented 93 collapses. In the brief period since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office, there have already been 14 additional failures. Such instability not only disrupts businesses but also leaves households without electricity, exacerbating the nation's socio-economic challenges.

The need for a robust and reliable power supply is more critical than ever. By decentralizing the power grid, Nigeria can empower local communities to manage and maintain their electricity needs, reducing the burden on the national grid and enhancing energy security. Localized power solutions can also foster innovation, attract investment in renewable energy sources, and create jobs, ultimately contributing to national development.

Vice President Shettima’s advocacy reflects a growing consensus that Nigeria must rethink its approach to power generation and distribution. It is imperative for policymakers to prioritize the establishment of decentralized power grids, enabling local communities to take charge of their energy futures.

As we move forward, it is crucial for all stakeholders—government, traditional rulers, and citizens—to collaborate in shaping a sustainable energy landscape for Nigeria. Together, we can work towards a future where power is not just a privilege for the few, but a right for all.
