A Call for Global Action
Toni Garrn Foundation
Fostering global justice through gender equality advocacy.
As we enter October, it's time to reflect on the interconnectedness of our world and the urgent need for global justice.
From from our project partners in Burundi, Uganda, and Ghana to every corner of the globe, the fight for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls is ongoing and affects us all. Whether it’s advocating for girls’ education in Burundi, empowering women entrepreneurs in Uganda, or supporting female leaders in Ghana, the progress we make in one place has a ripple effect worldwide.
Gender equality isn’t just a local issue - it’s a global one. We are all connected, and achieving justice and equality for women and girls everywhere is a shared responsibility. The challenges faced by women in accessing education, economic opportunities, and leadership roles are not confined to any single region; they are global in scope and demand a collective response.?Gender equality is fundamental to building peaceful and prosperous societies, and educating girls is the cornerstone of achieving it. It's crucial for tackling global challenges such as poverty, climate change, public health, and economic development.
This month, let's reaffirm our commitment to gender justice. We can all contribute - by raising awareness, advocating for policy changes, or supporting organizations that are making a difference.
In 2023, several disturbing cases of gender-based violence captured global attention. In Kenya, Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei was tragically set on fire by her partner after a domestic dispute, ultimately leading to her death. Meanwhile, in France, Gisèle Pélicot endured years of horrific abuse, being drugged and raped by dozens of men, orchestrated by her husband.?Not to mention the alarming plight of women and girls in Afghanistan, who continue to suffer under the oppressive rule of the Taliban. These cases highlight the pervasive nature of such violence and the urgent need for global action to combat gender-based violence and protect vulnerable individuals.
Global justice and equality starts with you! Help us creating change!
As highlighted in the latest report by UNODC and UN Women, nearly 89.000 women and girls were intentionally killed worldwide in 2022, marking the highest annual figure recorded in the past two decades. It is important to note that this analysis focuses exclusively on deaths classified in crime statistics as "female intimate partner or family-related homicides". Most killings of women and girls are gender motivated, with more than 133 women and girls killed every day by someone in their own home, often a family member or intimate partner. While global data on femicide is improving, significant gaps remain, particularly in regions like Africa and Asia, where reliable statistics are harder to obtain. These numbers highlight the urgent need for global action to address gender-based violence and protect women and girls from such horrific crimes.
What happened in the TGF universe this month?
Official (re)opening of the newly renovated Kingdom Medical Center in Uganda
This month, we proudly celebrated the reopening of the newly renovated Medical Center in Mpigi. With support from local politicians and community leaders, the event marked a significant milestone in improving healthcare access in the area. Thanks to our partner “Eau Thermale Avène,” we were able to carry out extensive renovations, including building new toilets and providing on-site accommodations for staff to ensure 24/7 service.
The community has especially welcomed the newly equipped laboratory and the introduction of “Youth Friendly Services,” which focus on educating young people and providing access to contraceptions and education on family planning methods. Additionally, the brand-new delivery room with an adjoining bathroom offers significant relief for women. We look forward to continued collaboration and will keep you updated on our progress.

New partner: “Totya Platform” invites all survivors of sexual violence to its annual gathering
Our new partner, Totya Platform, is dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual violence and envisions a world free from trauma. They provide a range of services, including emergency medical care to prevent HIV and treat infections, as well as virtual and in-person counseling and legal assistance, empowering survivors on their path to healing. By fostering safe spaces for dialogue, advocating for justice, and engaging in community education, Totya?seeks to break the silence surrounding sexual violence and promote a culture of prevention and support across Uganda.
This month, we began our collaboration by supporting Totya’s annual gathering for survivors who have progressed through their counseling program and are now feeling stable and healthy. Organized by the Psychosocial Emergency Support (PES) Department, the event provided a safe space for survivors to connect, share their experiences, and transition from surviving to thriving. Participants engaged in activities like football, netball, music, dance, and drama, which offered therapeutic benefits and promoted holistic recovery. Essential items such as pads, soap, and sugar were also distributed to support their basic needs and enhance their well-being.
Final exams at Wioso Senior High School in Ghana
The school year at Wioso Senior High School in Ghana concluded in September for 146 students, including 88 girls, and we are eagerly awaiting their results. Practical subjects like Home Economics are particularly popular, providing students with essential and valuable skills, such as life skills and employability. Home Economics is especially valuable for girls as it equips them with crucial life skills beyond traditional gender roles, such as cooking, nutrition, and financial management. By offering life skills alongside traditional home economics curriculum young people develop skills often associated with vocational training. In time Wioso High School will build the pathways for students, enabling more students to start small businesses, teaching entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency, expanding opportunities even if they can't attend university. Home economics in ?Wioso Senior High School is empowering girls and helping to bridge the gap between education and future opportunities.
