The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development e.V. (IOER) is a non-university research centre and a member of the Leibniz Association. We pursue a spatial development that enables humanity to thrive within ecological boundaries while ensuring planetary justice. Given the severity of the present global social-ecological crisis, our work aims to accelerate and achieve deep and encompassing transformations that shape sustainable and resilient regions, cities and neighbourhoods.

As a centre for advanced spatial sustainability science we develop cross-scale spatial information, analysis tools and knowledge, as well as policy- and planning instruments that enhance adaptive and transformative capacities in territories and places. To that effect we strive to elucidate the internal and external sustainability orientations of individuals, organisations and society, as well as their embeddedness in socio-ecological-technological spatial configurations. Our research and transfer activities draw on integrated mono-, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches, and are reflexive of our role as scientists in spatial development.

We investigate the features, patterns and dynamics of socio-ecological-technological spatial configurations. We focus on landscapes, the built environment, land use and spatial economies to explore and compare their development and transformation, particularly in the territorial context of urban districts and agglomerations, urbanized and rural areas, as well as regions and countries - including cross-border areas. Key environmental factors we examine are the regional climate, ecosystems, biodiversity, resources and natural hazards. As corresponding physical factors of society we study technologies, materials and energy. Ultimately, our principal concern is the coevolution of these factors with societal institutions, cultures and practices regarding sustainability and resilience impacts. This implies considering the role of different individuals and actors, their interactions, as well as society as a whole in co-shaping spatial developments.

We draw on the spatial, environmental, social, economic, law and engineering sciences, using various notions of spatiality as a shared reference. This ranges from physical-material space to conceptions of space as relational, socially constructed or imaginary, as well as subjective experiential and inner space.

About the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme and your profile

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships are mono-beneficiary actions that require researchers to deliver a specific research project under supervision at a host institution in another country. We invite expressions of interest for European Postdoctoral Fellowships from promising, innovative researchers with an excellent track record (academic publications and other scientific output) to undertake research in the IOER areas of expertise. European Postdoctoral Fellowships must last between 12 and 24 months. The salary consists of a combined living and mobility allowance (and if applicable, family, long-term leave and special needs allowances). The deadline for full proposals is 12 October 2021. To be considered, applications must be complete and meet the following criteria:

MSCA eligibility criteria:

• You must be in possession of a PhD at the time of the call deadline (12 October 2021).
• You can only apply up to eight years after the completion of your PhD (exceptions: career breaks, work outside research, research outside Europe for reintegrating researchers).
• You must not have resided or worked in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before the call deadline.

IOER selection criteria:

• ?Alignment with the IOER research profile (above);
• Match with IOER senior scientist profile for supervision (see website);
• Quality of proposal regarding MSCA award criteria (excellence, impact, quality and efficiency of implementation)

Application must include:

• CV (max. 5 pages), including full name and e-mail;
• List of publications, with indication of your five most important ones and how these are relevant for your career;
• Motivation letter (in English, max. 1 page);
• Short research project proposal (in English, max. 3 pages) structured on the basis of the MSCA proposal template, and referring to the MSCA Green Charter;
• Short career development plan (in English, max. 3 pages). In addition to research objectives, this plan should comprise the researcher’s training and career needs, including training on transferable skills, teaching, planning for publications and participation in conferences and events aiming at opening science and research to citizens.

Expressions of interest will be assessed by the IOER based on the above criteria. Applicants will be informed of our decision until 12 August 2021.

The most promising applicant(s) will receive support and guidance by a dedicated supervisor (senior scientist) and a research manager during the development of the full proposal and the submission process.

Once you become a Fellow, we offer a wide range of services, including for re-location, opportunities to maximise the transfer of knowledge and impact of your research, optional teaching engagements at the Dresden Leibniz Graduate School and Technische Universit?t Dresden, and involvement in a broad network of local to international IOER research partners.
