My phone rang on an otherwise ordinary day - January 5, 2010, a date now forever etched in my memory. It was my daughter-in-law calling, her voice unusually serious.

"I've got some news," she said, pausing. "I've been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. The doctors say I have six months to live."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. My son, disabled and unable to work, their small children, the looming specter of financial ruin - it all crashed down on me in an instant. As a father, a grandfather, I felt the crushing weight of responsibility.
