Call to Action: Unchaining the Black Mind and Reclaiming Our Power
For lack of a word, the message was lost. How do we frame this work? Is it The Cultural Imperialism of Christmas? Or perhaps The Enduring Legacy of the Brown v. Board of Education Doll Test? The truth is stark: the adverse implications of these realities linger in the minds of Black children and adults alike, shaping how we see ourselves and our worth.
We, Caribbean immigrants, often thrive because we arrive with no perception of inhibition, no sense of racism, and no awareness of the battles fought here to pry open the gates we now walk through. We owe it to ourselves and those who came before us to recognize and honor those sacrifices.
Consider this: the Black dollar circulates only once within our community, compared to seven times in others. That narrative alone should alarm us—but the reality is worse. The banks and credit card companies ensure that even this single circulation is fleeting, siphoning away wealth before it can build a foundation. Adding to this is the tragic truth: many in our own community, shackled by a "chained mind," direct whatever wealth they control outward—toward White businesses, White systems, and White dominance.
This cannot continue. We must redefine our relationship with wealth, community, and power. Let’s invest in ourselves, our businesses, and our future. Let’s ensure the Black dollar builds Black dreams and creates legacies of strength and resilience. Most importantly, let’s break the chains of cultural imperialism, self-doubt, and external control.
It starts with a single choice, a single word, and a single action. Will you be part of the change?
