A Call to Action: Reframing the Pesticide Safety Conversation
Last month, a phone call shook my world. My father, who had held senior positions in the Andhra Pradesh government, was rushed to the hospital after accidentally exposing himself to Fipronil while trying to control termites in his beloved library.
The next five days were a nightmare - doctors on strike, ICU admission, his nervous system impacted, and lung capacity drastically reduced. Fortunately, We had the resources to bring him back home, but this experience was a wake-up call.
Here I was, travelling across India to educate farmers on safe pesticide use, yet my father fell victim to mishandling. This incident made me realize that, directly or indirectly, everyone exposed to pesticides needs to understand the critical importance of safe handling.
For decades, we've approached pesticide safety, focusing on risks and dangers. Yet, despite our efforts, unsafe practices persist. It's time for a paradigm shift.
What if we reframed pesticide safety as an opportunity rather than a burden?
? An opportunity for farmers to protect their health and livelihoods
? A chance for businesses to innovate and lead in sustainable agriculture

? A pathway for policymakers to safeguard both food security and environmental health
We need to move beyond fear-based messaging and create a positive, empowering narrative. One that inspires real change in our agricultural communities.
This isn't just about following rules—it's about building a resilient, sustainable future for agriculture. It's about recognizing that safe pesticide use is a crucial skill in modern farming, as important as crop selection or soil management.
I'm starting this series to reach out to everyone involved in handling pesticides. Not everyone has the luck or resources to save themselves or their loved ones. Let's work together to ensure that knowledge about safe pesticide handling reaches every corner of our society.
Join me in this journey as we explore new perspectives on pesticide safety. Let's challenge old assumptions, share innovative ideas, and work together to create meaningful change. How can we make pesticide safety a source of pride and empowerment for farmers and all those who handle these chemicals? Share your thoughts and experiences.

First, as you mentioned, the first person who applies it, the farmer in this case. Inhalation or topical touch points are major concerns. So, safety not only safety per se but as a regulatory mechanism should be built in with proper trainings and field demonstration. From nutrition perspective, Agri and Food science are two pillars which helps delivers nutrients from soil to plate. So, sustainably managing at at farm level will ensure your plate nutrients. Agricultural chemicals and pesticides are being held responsible for alarming cancer rates in Malwa. Due to the high prevalence of the dreaded disease, this place is termed as the 'cancer capital of the country'. Numerous studies have indicated that the excessive and inappropriate application of pesticides and fertilizers has contaminated water and soil, impacting the rural population. Looking forward to your series
