"Social Renaissance" defines a process aimed at spreading awareness about the growing weight of the “marginalities,” through innovative impact-driven models that combine new technologies and humanities, entrepreneurial approach and civic engagement. The result of that process will be new welfare models, evidence-based decision-making and innovative public-private partnerships in business, finance, voluntary sector and social entrepreneurship. Marginality is “an involuntary position and condition of an individual or group at the margins of social, political, economic, ecological, and biophysical systems, that prevent them from access to resources, assets, services, restraining freedom of choice, preventing the development of capabilities, and eventually causing extreme poverty” (Gatzweiler et al. 2011, p.3).
"Third Sector" organizations seek to serve at the nexus situated between the state, the market and the community and their intermediate position makes them relevant in overcoming market and state failures and proposing social change in both emerging and developing countries (Tello-Rozas, 2016). "Third Sector" organizations are recognized as intermediaries that support deprived communities when their capacity has reached its limit or their needs have not been fulfilled either by the state or the private sector.
Politics and Economics alone cannot overcome these externalities without Community.
As intermediaries, "Third Sector" organizations mobilize goods and services but also contribute to improve access to available resources or to key decision-making processes at different spatial levels. Despite the variety of definitions, the different concepts of social innovation share core elements in which ‘innovation’ is understood as the capacity to create and implement novel ideas which are proven to deliver value and ‘social’ refers to the value expected from this innovation which is related to quality of life, solidarity and well-being (Czischke, 2013).
To evoke "The Third Sector Social Renaissance" we must support, develop and unleash caring compassionate leaders who can operate in the "Third Sector" space as transformational catalysts to create varied forms of capital to overcome adverse effects of both poverty and marginality.
The Third Sector is the marriage of these three systems to act as a generative field embracing and merging the benefits of each of these systems. It takes specific skills, characteristics, competencies and traits to lead across this complex domain. For this reason, we have set the mission of Global Urban Nomads to cultivate a distributed global community of creative compassionate leaders who catalyze transformative change for humanity through experiential learning, cross cultural exchange, and social entrepreneurship. We embrace; Philotimo, essentially a way of life. This Greek word represents our core values. It refers to a sense of dignity, responsibility, and honor. It’s usually used to characterize someone who’s focused on doing a job well and who’s generally a well-behaved and dedicated person. This cultural value was the basis of the Greek innovation of democracy. Their care for one another formed the sense of community and connectedness that lead to their unique civic life and cultural innovation.
At Global Urban Nomads, we believe there is a pragmatic need for a skilled workforce to enter the Third Sector. Our talent development program is based "Three Pillars" required to be effective in these careers; Transformational Leadership, Cultural Competence, and Social Entrepreneurship. Our programs are experiential based learning experiences designed to ready and transform the future leaders of the Third Sector to act together in community to establish a social revolution that establishes more caring, compassionate and inclusive markets, public agencies, and communities.
