California non-profit bill not-good for non-profits
The California state legislature is considering a bill that would require all websites produced by charities (wherever they are) that solicits contributions in the state have a prominent link to the CA AG office. Here is a link to the proposed legislationhttps://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=ab_2855&sess=CUR&house=B&author=frazier_%3Cfrazier%3E Hundreds of CA-based charities have expressed strong opposition to the bill. National organizations, including Volunteers of America, which is my employer's national organization, are closely monitoring the progress of the bill, including changes. Criticism ranges from the unintended effect of the bill to foster distrust of charities to the proliferation of such legislation in other states, making charities' websites cluttered with information about states' Atty General offices. More information about this can be found at https://www.thenonprofittimes.com/news-articles/california-charities-pan-philanthropic-warning-label/ and https://www.calnonprofits.org/publications/article-archive/476-ab-2855-a-bad-bill-for-nonprofits and https://www.nonprofitlawblog.com/oppose-california-ab-2855-the-required-overhead-disclosure-bill/ . Our donors should have a well-founded confidence in the work of our non-profits. Donors who have questions about a charity can and ought to contact their Attorney General's office directly. Also donors can check charitynavigator.org, guidestar.org or their Better Business Bureau. Or call the charity directly.
