California Movers, not spooked by more regulations...yet!

Last week we had the honor of welcoming to lively Colma , our California Moving and Storage Association President, Steve Weitekamp .? Steve was recently honored by the International Association of Movers at the annual convention which was hosted in Canada. He was inducted into the Hall of Honor, a recognition for his many years of industry service and experience, in California and beyond! Along with Steve, we were also honored to have our current association Chairman Jesse Chabot , President?of Golden West Moving Systems . We were delighted to have their wives Carmen Weitekamp and Sovann Chabot also in attendance.?

We presented certificates of recognition to Jesse and Steve by our Town of Colma Council Mayor Joanne F. del Rosario,? San Mateo County supervisor David Canepa was in attendance and presented commendation certificates in person, and lastly, our U.S. Representative Kevin Mullin ?office sent them certificates as well. We think it’s a big deal to have them in our town, sharing industry and trade news and trends and encouraging all of us to continue our mission to provide safe moves to our customers.?

Jesse shared his family’s business origin story, the company was founded in 1964 and Jesse is now a third generation mover. He will have a lovely write up in the communicator about his visit, so I won’t spoil his column.?

Steve shared industry news, including the recent developments of the military Global Household Goods Contract, as well as California’s updated sick leave requirements for the new year, and CARB Clean Truck Check ?Program among other topics. By the way, I just completed our enrollment in the program, for a company our size, and having all the information available ahead of time, (VIN, License Plate, Location, Year, Engine Year, DOT/MC etc) it took about an hour and 15 minutes, that included paying the $30 per truck fee. You have the option to do a bulk upload if you have a large fleet, and remember that not doing this will prevent you from getting your truck registration next year. There is a “periodic testing” required and you can find more information on CARB’s website or if you are a member of the CMSA, a really helpful and concise guide was included in the September 2023 newsletter. We also held our board election, where I was re-elected as board member for the CMSA.?

Shout out to our friend and San Diego Chapter president Andria Skiff ? of Republic Moving and Storage . She made her way up here, boot and all! She also gave me some private one on one driver’s ed training on backing up into a parking space.?

As usual, we had delicious food. My sister Sonia Garcia of maquilishuatsf saved the day when our caterer had an emergency and canceled on us at the last minute!? Yeay for big sisters!

Some of us dressed up and celebrated Halloween. I am happy to report that Chitra Bheeman of Advantage Moving and Storage was crowned winner of the Halloween Costume. Honorable mention/second place went to Casey Myers and Diego Periasco. They both graciously donated their prize money to the chapter.?
