CALIFORNIA DREAMING ... 12% Of New Vehicles Purchased in California are expected to be Electric in 2018! ... #CuL8R #Doubleview #CASAminerals
In Aug, 1 out of 10 new vehicles purchased in the State of California (the 5th largest economy in the world) were ELECTRIC ! While the 10% for August is the highest market share for sales of new EVs ever in California, the 4th quarter of 2018 should be even higher due to a significant number of deliveries of the Tesla Model 3.
For the entire year of 2018, EV sales market share will likely come close to 12% overall in California. At this rate, California could “cross the EV chasm” (16-18% of new vehicle sales) at some point during 2020.
With the new EV model impact in mind, a few key factors will likely help fuel continued strong growth in EV sales in California over the next few years ...
Gas Prices: If the price of gas rises above $4 a gallon in California for an extended period, you could see a lot consumers make the switch to EV, especially by those with long daily commutes to and from work, along with a environmentally conscious consumer.
California Assembly Bill AB1184: If state bill AB1184 passes in 2019, it could establish a $3 billion fund to support the adoption of EVs with larger and instant rebates, more programs for low-income buyers, and the deployment of more charging stations. This program could especially give a boost to sales of EVs priced under $40,000.
Tesla Pick Up Truck : The first mainstream fully Electric Pick Up Truck will likely be released before 2020. As Pick Up Trucks are the best selling category in the US it will be interesting to see the dent Tesla will put in that segment. I believe it will catch everyone off guard.
Tesla Model Y: The upcoming crossover version based on the Model 3 is ideal for the California market. It will be perfect for the active outdoor lifestyle of many Californians, and it will replace the now passé Toyota Prius and then the Model 3, as the ultimate way to signal to your neighbours that you are indeed green. Once the Model Y is widely available it could easily become the top selling vehicle overall in California.
Other New EV Models ... Finally, the upcoming luxury SUVs/COVs from Jaguar, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW should do very well in the Golden State, adding perhaps a combined 50,000 units sold per year. VW plans to be a major player in the EV space as well, manufacturing a more affordable sector. They have recently announced that they will commit to over 80 Billion $ in research and development of Electric Vehicles. This new competition is welcomed by Tesla as they will most likely maintain a dominant local market share in this sector for years to come and will force charging infrastructure to expand. The EV market will without a doubt become mainstream in the 2020's and Tesla will go down in history as being the Auto Manufacturer Disrupter of the Century!
