Calder Valley flooding and NFM, March 2019
Amanda McDermott
Senior Landscape Architect at 2B / Trustee and Vice Chair at Slow The Flow
It has been another difficult weekend for the Calder Valley, following Storm Hannah. Anecdotally, I am aware that at least Todmorden, Mytholmroyd, and Sowerby Bridge all suffered from flooding.
However, I am feeling very proud of Slow The Flow Calderdale, because Hebden Bridge had a near miss, and one can't help but feel that we played some part in that. We don't know yet just how much impact our 350 leaky dams at Hardcastle Crags had, but the video shows how much water a few of them were holding back.
Surely this, x 350, directly upstream of Hebden Bridge, must have contributed to keeping the flood waters at bay.
There is plenty more to do, but I think we can pat ourselves on the back a little, before we roll up our sleeves and carry on advocating Natural Flood Management.
Thank you to all our volunteers, and particularly my friends on the management team, who give up countless hours of their voluntary time to help their neighbours.
How Can You Help?
There is still time to book for our 'Community-led NFM' Conference (Bill Blackledge and I are speaking on SuDS), the last weekend in March: https://slowtheflow.net/a-celebration-of-community-resilience/
and please support the fundraising ceilidh on Saturday 30th March, it'll be great fun: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mayors-ceilidh-slow-the-flow-fundraiser-tickets-55772702655
As ever, do give some thought to how you can Slow The Flow in your own environment - and send us your case studies!
