How Leibniz Derived the Famous Formula for Integration by Parts
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was the quintessential polymath. He made essential contributions to philosophy (logic and metaphysics), mathematics (he was a co-inventor of the calculus), linguistics, theology, engineering, law, computer science, and many other disciplines. Leibniz once remarked that he often needed to use a substantial part of his week to document the thoughts of just a single morning!
"When one compares the talents one has with those of a Leibniz, one is tempted to throw away one's books and go die quietly in the dark of some forgotten corner," wrote the philosopher Diderot.
In this article, I describe how Leibniz derived the famous formula of integration by parts and also other innovations of his version of the infinitesimal calculus.
Below (left) is a picture of his working space in his residence in Hannover. On the right is a statue of Leibniz (without the wig!).
