The calculator that counts Carbon Emission

The term Global Warming is not new to any of us. We are made aware of the issue through news coverage of various international meets discussing the topic. But how many of us can actually comprehend the seriousness of the issue? Do we take into consideration the carbon footprint that each one of us single-handedly leaves on the environment around us? Every time we accept a plastic bag from the grocery store, do we think about the damage it does?

Carbon emission is one of the major reason for global warming. Each product we use has a carbon footprint attached to it, figuratively speaking. There are two main causes of carbon emission, natural and human. There have always been greenhouse gasses present in our atmosphere, but in recent history, this amount has skyrocketed, leaving the natural atmosphere unable to deal with the sudden rise.

The main source of this carbon emission comes from the burning of fossil fuels. The past few years have seen a rise in carbon emissions in India and most of this emission comes from the burning of fossil fuel for transport and to generate electricity. Another major reason is the continual use of plastic bags and bottles. The bottled water industry has seen a rise in sales. Not only is bottled water much more expensive than normal drinking water, it is also one of the main causes of pollution. While aluminium cans are much better than plastic bottles, even they have their own shortcomings. So how do you help? The first step you can take towards a greener environment is to recycle. Instead of trashing plastic bags, reuse them, and instead of throwing your gadgets away, recycle them.

EcoCentric has developed its own E-waste recycling calculator that helps you figure out much carbon emission you will stop by recycling various items. The most frequently used electronic items in the last 5 years are Computers, Monitors/TVs, Laptops, Cell phones, VCR/DVD Players, and Printers/Fax Machines.

For every item you recycle, you will get to know just how much carbon emission you have saved the environment from. For example, recycling 1 computer can save 81* lbs of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. This amount is equivalent to 14 liters of Gasoline, 3 trees, 118 plastic bottles and 541 aluminum cans! All this from recycling just one computer. All you have to do is to log on to https://www.ecocentric.co.in and type in the number of items you would like to recycle. Go on and be the environment hero!
