Calculating Investment Performance

When investors look at their account statements they want to know if their investments have gained or lost money. While that seems like a pretty common thing to do, what's common is the mistake of comparing the book value and the market value of their portfolio to calculate their gain or loss. Comparing these two values usually leads to inaccurate conclusions about the performance of the investment.
