Cairn Community Games Track and Field Celebrate Record-Breaking Success with 2,500 Young Athletes Taking Part in Perfect Weather Conditions

Cairn Community Games Track and Field national finals reached new heights today, 24th August, in SETU Carlow as 2,500 children, took part in more than 50 events, from the U8 100m sprint to the U12 long jump. The sun shone brilliantly throughout the day, setting the perfect stage for a very successful day for children around the country.

Gerry McGuinness, President of the Community Games, expressed his delight at the overwhelming participation and the smooth execution of the event. "Today’s turnout and the energy on the track and field are a true testament to the spirit of Cairn Community Games. Watching these young athletes give their all, inspired by their heroes, is what this event is all about. The weather was on our side, and it made the day even more special for everyone involved.”

David Hoysted , Chief Executive of Cairn Community Games, echoed this sentiment, noting the significance of the event in the broader context of Irish athletics. "Cairn Community Games have always been a stepping stone for our young athletes, and today, we saw the future of Irish sports in action. Seeing so many children participate with such enthusiasm, I’m reminded of former Olympians like Mark English, Sarah Lavin, Sophie Becker, Sonia O'Sullivan, and Olive Loughnane, who all once took part in these very games. Who knows? We may have witnessed a future Olympian here today."

Donal McNally Director of Sport at South East Technological University emphasised the importance of nurturing young talent. "SETU Carlow is proud to support an event that not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters a love for sport from a young age. This event is a celebration of potential, and it’s incredible to see these young athletes take part with such energy and enthusiasm – win, lose or draw."

We had a brilliant day in SETU Carlow. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked very hard to make it run so well. The live streaming was great for those at home who could not make it but were able to watch all the races.

Amazing weekend in SETU Carlow. Thanks to the volunteers who set up community games within each county and then to the volunteers who host the events both in county and nationally. Great to see the volume of children competing and displaying such incredible talent. 2 very long days but I've a very happy 12 year old who has brought home both silver and gold... what a weekend!! Well done to all ??????
