Caged
Dina Greenberg

Since the election of Donald J. Trump, I've struggled to articulate my outrage and sorrow as our government continues to separate families, incarcerate children, institutionalize racism—and now—deport children under the cover of night back to the dangers their families managed to escape.
In 2018, I began a series of poems entitled “Caged.” I write from my vantage as an educated, white woman, a mother, a child of God. I am painfully aware of my responsibilities to honor the subjects of these poems rather than co-opt their voices and agency. As a Jew, it is impossible for me to view images of cages without revisiting the perverse cruelty of the holocaust. This is my impetus for holding their stories close to my heart. I hope you will do the same.
My poem “All that We Hear en Los Estados Unidos” appears in the June 2020 Issue of Chronogram Magazine.
