Caeteris Paribus, you can also learn by reading. A few days ago I finished reading Henry Kissinger's book "Diplomacy", New York, 1994, Portuguese edition, Lisbon, 1996, Gradiva.

Reading a book by an author when he dies is not very common, when that person is 100 years old, not unanimously appreciated, I say with charity because in fact Kissinger is as admired as he is hated, the circumstance is even more remarkable.

The character of the authors I read doesn't determine my reading choices, it's the content, the opinions expressed and the diverse views that interest me.

Diplomacy is a masterpiece, the other three books by the author that I have read before are an excellent continuation and precision of this one, but this is the founding book of a personal style of historical-political analysis based on the perspective of American diplomacy from before its independence until around 1993, the following books deal with the subsequent period.

The new world order, Wilsonianism, American independence, American exceptionalism, Bismark, Versailles, European fascisms, Stalin, Roosevelt, Churchill, Adenauer, De Gaule, Kennedy, Vietnam, the Cold War, Nixon, Reagan, the end of the Soviet Union, are all seen in a magnifying glass by Kissinger, who have studied them in depth or lived events events with them intensely as a main or secondary political actor.

The differences and approximations between politique d'abord, American moralism and the European real politik of Richelieu's raison d'etat are dissected and their applications and consequences analysed in detail.

The vision for the future, the current American situation, the continuing European confusion, the anticipation of China's rise and the risks of excluding and underestimating Russia (ideia that had never occurred too me before) are among the conclusions.

I recommend reading this book, passionately or dispassionately, to all my friends who are interested in the future but who like to know the past in order to better anticipate what lies ahead.

The Portuguese translation, proofreading and editing are of a very high standard.

Some years ago, while recovering at home for almost 4 months from a broken leg, that was my reading - yes it needs time. And yes, it's worth reading. Thanks Pedro for your always interesting reading suggestions!
