AI and Marine Engineering – Insights from #caesesuc2024

At the recent CAESES User Conference (#caesesuc2024), Dr. Jakob Lohse from NAVASTO delivered an engaging presentation on AI and ML for Marine Applications. Jakob highlighted how AI and ML are reshaping the marine industry, particularly in solving intricate engineering problems with data-driven solutions.

A key focus of the presentation was the AutoPlan R&D project, an initiative that involves developing parametric models and ML simulations to optimize planing hull designs. We shared case studies where NAVASTO’s tools achieved precise predictions for critical metrics like thrust, heave, and pitch, often with deviations as low as 0.23%.

Further advancing marine applications, we explored transfer learning, where AI models trained on one dataset are fine-tuned using a small amount of new data to generalize across similar designs. This continual training approach improves model accuracy, making AI a robust tool in marine design and optimization.

NAVASTO’s work showcases the potential of AI/ML in handling the complexities of marine engineering, from predicting wave elevation to reducing thrust requirements!
