Shaping Futures with Resilient Digital Infrastructure
The Union Cabinet has approved the Department of Telecommunications’ plan to refarm approximately 1,100 MHz of spectrum across 10 bands, ranging from 470 MHz to 6 GHz, currently used by government ministries and departments. Valued at an estimated ?5 lakh crore, this spectrum will be repurposed for 5G and future 6G services and auctioned over the coming years. The refarming exercise, backed by the Committee of Secretaries, aims to address the growing demand for mid-band spectrum critical for 5G. The move includes releasing parts of the 6 GHz band, which telecom operators have long sought to meet their future needs for advanced mobile technologies. However, the government has yet to decide on the allocation of the entire 6 GHz band, with some portions potentially earmarked for Wi-Fi services.
The spectrum refarming is a critical step towards enhancing India’s telecom infrastructure, with new airwaves required to support advanced mobile technologies and accommodate industry demands. While the valuation of the spectrum will be determined by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India during auctions, officials expect the airwaves to fetch high bids. The decision is part of broader efforts to free up spectrum from legacy users such as the armed forces and space departments, ensuring resources are optimally utilized for the country’s digital transformation.
