What is Health Data Interoperability and Standards?

Health data interoperability relies on standardized frameworks and codes to enable seamless communication among various health information systems. This enhances care delivery, supports medical research, and ensures the privacy and security of patient data.

Health data standards encompass three main categories:

  1. Terminology Standards: These employ standardized codes (e.g., ICD-10-CM, CPT, SNOMED CT, LOINC) to ensure consistent communication and interpretation of health data across various systems.
  2. Content Standards: Focused on structuring electronic medical documents, standards like C-CDA, HL7 (version 2 and 3), and USCDI ensure organized and clear representation of medical data for efficient capture, storage, and exchange.
  3. Data Exchange Standards: Facilitating interoperability, standards such as FHIR dictate formats, document architecture, APIs, and other components for effective information exchange. FHIR, developed by HL7, is widely adopted for its support of modern web-based APIs.
