Another thing that I had to do was to train myself to think differently than everyone else. I don’t see things as everyone else does and that gives me the perspective and ability to find unique answers to problems. People are proud when they tell you that “they think outside of the box”. I’ll bet that 90% or more do not know what the derivation of that expression is. I do!!! I don’t think outside of the box. Every morning when I wake up my mind is like a blank artist's canvas. Thinking outside of the box assumes limitations and borders. With my blank canvas, there are no limitations. There are no borders. My thought process can take me anywhere and it’s a fun ride most of the time. I think of things that no one else has ever thought of to solve the problems I have to solve and I really have fun doing it!!!
I woke up one morning and my subconscious worked on a situation while I was sleeping. This often happens to me. I thought of how to bring together two things that I knew from my years of unique experience. I said that there was now a one-million-dollar limitation for Bonus Depreciation and that I could build a self-storage facility that can be broken down to Tangible Personal Property to take advantage of the CARES ACT one-million-dollar limitation and benefit my investor clients. So they would get a huge tax write off that will allow them to recoup taxes they paid in the last 5 years. They would then be left with cash in their pocket and a business that will generate cash flow for many years to come.
I am currently 74 years old but I have the mind of an astute 35 or 40-year-old and I have the passion of a 21-year-old. One of the things that give me that competitive edge is that I have over 50 years of incredible experience behind me that I learned from each of these disciplines. Each different situation gives me the opportunity to learn how to solve problems in a different way. And, solving problems becomes fun when you try and think of different, unique ways of getting the answer no matter what the fact pattern is. In each of my endeavors, I had the pleasure and the challenge of dealing with people one on one or in groups like when I was a University Professor. So, I developed wonderful people skills and can carry on a conversation, for business or not, with just about anyone and entertain them and educate them at the same time.
