C# Keywords Tutorial Part 97: void

C# is a powerful programming language with many features that make it an excellent choice for developing software applications. One of the most important keywords in C# is the “void” keyword. In this blog post, we will explore what the “void” keyword means, how it works, and how it can be used in C# programming.

What is the “void” keyword in C#?

In C#, “void” is a keyword used to indicate that a method does not return a value. When a method is declared as “void,” it means that the method does not return anything, and the method call is used for its side effects. This means that the method may modify the state of the program or perform some action, but it does not return a value that can be used in subsequent calculations or operations.

Syntax and Example:

Here is an example of a method declared with the “void” keyword:

public void SayHello()
{
? ? Console.WriteLine("Hello, World!");
}

In this example, the “SayHello” method does not return any value. It simply prints “Hello, World!” to the console when called. The “void” keyword is used to indicate that this method does not return anything.

Another example of the “void” keyword in action is a method that modifies the state of an object:

public void SetName(string name)
{
? ? this.name = name;
}

In this example, the “SetName” method takes a string parameter called “name” and sets the value of the “name” field of the current object to the value of the parameter. The method does not return a value, but it modifies the state of the object by setting the value of the “name” field.

Benefits of Using the “void” Keyword:

In C# programming, the “void” keyword is an effective tool since it enables us to design methods that carry out operations without returning data. When we wish to change the program’s state or carry out an operation without needing the caller code to handle a return value, this is helpful. By stating each method’s function and behavior with clarity, it also makes our code easier to understand and maintain.
