Bye bye Server - hello Cloud
Why you should start planning your Cloud Migration now
How long is your server license valid? Probably until February 15, 2024 - the end date of server support (updated conditions for Enterprise customers*). Atlassian is pursuing its Cloud-first strategy, and Atlassian Server customers should start looking for a suitable solution for them as soon as possible.
The top 3 reasons why companies are not in the Atlassian Cloud yet:
The transition to the Cloud involves cost calculations, budget approval processes, and technical assessments. This often takes longer than expected.
From today, there are still five months left, and depending on the company and effort, a migration can take between 2 and 12 months.
Cloud migration brings significant changes, as there are substantial differences compared to Atlassian Servers. Product features may vary; certain apps need to be rethought with the new integration possibilities in the Cloud or may function differently. In terms of security and compliance, there is a shared responsibility model with the Cloud provider, which companies need to consider. Therefore, a thorough assessment and comprehensive planning are essential.
In recent years, countless migrations to the Cloud have been carried out, much experience has been gained, processes have been optimized, and analyses regarding the cloud impact have been conducted, allowing companies' concerns to be alleviated. Certified Atlassian Solution Partners assist you in the planning and execution of your Cloud Migration, enabling you to transition to the Cloud faster and smoother.

What is the Atlassian Cloud?
Atlassian Cloud is a platform of cloud-based software products developed and provided by Atlassian. The Cloud offers a range of tools and services that enable teams to collaborate more efficiently, manage projects, and develop software.
Among the most well-known products, which we also use daily at XALT, are:
?
Benefits of the Cloud
The Atlassian Cloud offers the advantage of being hosted on Cloud infrastructures, which means users can access the tools via the Internet without needing local installations or maintenance.
The benefits for Cloud customers are:

What about the costs?
Is the Cloud more expensive than Server? This question isn't quickly answered. When considering operational costs, there are no costs associated with the Cloud. On the other hand, with Servers, maintenance and infrastructure can quickly add up to over 100,000 Euros.
However, license costs are cheaper for Servers compared to the Cloud. On the flip side, there is almost no downtime in the Cloud, positively impacting Cloud costs.
The Major Topic: Security and Data Protection
Where are my data located, and are they secure? By now, Atlassian has been able to answer and resolve these questions. In Europe, the data is hosted on servers in Frankfurt or Dublin; accordingly, EU data protection regulations are adhered to.
Additionally, XALT has recently been provided with the "bring your own key" (BYOK) encryption for Confluence and Jira. This additionally enhances the security of your cloud environment, as you can encrypt your data with your personal key. Even if Atlassian were to be hacked, your data would remain encrypted.
Atlassian has been committed to the topic of security not only since the Team23 event in Las Vegas but has been pushing the issue for some time now. Since this is a crucial point for or against switching to the Cloud in the European market, we work with our customers to address all concerns.

What should I consider before the migration?
Well-planned is half done: Planning before the cloud migration requires careful preparation to identify potential pitfalls, use resources efficiently, and ensure a smooth transition. Although planning initially involves additional effort, minimizing unexpected issues and enabling a successful and efficient transition to the Cloud pays off.
Based on our experience with Cloud migrations, we, in collaboration with Atlassian, have created a guide covering six critical areas for a successful migration assessment.
Apps: Evaluate your apps, integrations, and customizations with the Migration Assistant to ensure team productivity. Identify cloud-compatible apps and their security requirements.
Security and Compliance: Understand the shift from local responsibility to shared responsibility in the Cloud. We'll be able to help you with administrative tasks while considering strict security and compliance requirements.
User Management: Plan user migration and identity management in the Cloud early on. This will help your organization align with your cloud Identity and Access Management (IAM) strategy.
Performance: Evaluate data volume and structure before migration to optimize performance. Could you clean data before test migration for a seamless transition?
Differences in Cloud Products: Understand the critical differences between Cloud, managed Atlassian Data Center, and self-hosted server products. Could you create a list of features your team needs to ensure a smooth Cloud or Data Center transition?
Migration Team: Utilize XALT's support in project management, strategy selection, and during migration. You can get help for a successful and smooth transition.
