Bye-Bye Perfection, Hello Excellence

Bye-Bye Perfection, Hello Excellence

In today's fast-paced world, we find ourselves constantly surrounded by a culture that celebrates high achievement and top performance. For many intelligent and ambitious women, this often translates into an unyielding drive for perfection. We push ourselves to the brink, striving to excel in every aspect of our lives and to do so flawlessly.

While aiming to do our best is certainly commendable, the relentless pursuit of perfection can quickly become counterproductive and even harmful to our well-being. It narrows our focus solely on results and outcomes, causing us to overlook other vital qualities like creativity, resilience, learning from mistakes, and self-care. When every task demands perfection, even the smallest imperfections can make us feel like failures.

Instead of chastising ourselves for not achieving perfection, I believe it's time to shift our mindset towards the concept of excellence. Excellence sets a high standard, but it is not an absolute one. It recognizes that mistakes and improvements are natural parts of the journey. An excellent student, worker, or parent doesn't need to have all the answers; they demonstrate mastery over time through continuous growth and refinement.

Excellence signifies progress, not perfection. It's a journey, not a destination. With this mindset, we can take pride in showcasing top-tier skills, work ethic, and accomplishments without subjecting ourselves to harsh self-criticism if everything isn't flawless from the start. We grant ourselves the grace to learn from missteps and try again, embracing the human experience of imperfection with compassion.

By focusing on consistently enhancing our competencies in meaningful ways, excellence aligns more closely with maintaining a growth mindset. Perfectionism, on the other hand, can foster a fixed mindset where a single failure feels like the end of the world. With an excellence mindset, we replace judgment with self-acceptance and appreciation for the progress we've made.

Making this subtle shift from perfection to excellence could be particularly beneficial for high-achieving women, helping them avoid burnout. Instead of futilely chasing impossibilities, we direct our efforts towards real and consistent growth. We become kinder to ourselves when we inevitably fall short of an unrealistic perfect standard. And we create space for other important aspects of a balanced, purposeful life beyond mere results.

In a world that no longer rewards simply going through the motions, striving for excellence is a strong and sustainable way forward. It's an attainable, inspiring, and much less stressful philosophy for tackling life's challenges than the tyranny of perfection. So let's bid farewell to perfection and embrace a journey of continual learning, becoming the best versions of ourselves along the way.
