BVLOS Flights on Testfeld eFliegen BW

Last summer, Niklas Pauli from #unistuttgartifr conducted flights beyond the visual line of sight (#BVLOS) with an unpiloted aerial vehicle (#UAV) on the Testfeld eFliegen BW in Mengen, THE L?ND . For the first time, flights were conducted in the significantly expanded BVLOS area, making it possible to fly around the villages of Hundersingen and Hohentengen.

The team from University of Stuttgart accomplished the #flight tests despite high wind speeds and strong gusts. All flights obeyed the scheduled time slot and took place within the controlled airspace of Regio Airport Mengen (EDTM) during the regular opening hours of the #airport.

A HOD4TRACK system from Droniq GmbH was used to monitor the #airtraffic and our flying wing UAV (electric propulsion, 2 m wingspan, approx. 2.4 kg takeoff mass).

Data BVLOS flights between 10:00-12:30 a.m. on 25.07.2022 in Mengen:

  • Number of BVLOS flights: 4
  • Total flight distance: 55 km
  • Longest distance to takeoff point: 5 km
  • Maximum flight duration: 14 min

Still, the flights could not exhaust the extended BVLOS area of more than 2000 km2. Doing so remains a task for future missions and #research projects.
