Buzzworthy Investment in Sustainable Animal Nutrition Takes Wing

Sumitomo Corporation’s investment in Insect Protein Production and Biotech Company Will Support Next Generation Sustainable Feed Production

Currently, the clamor for sustainable food solutions must meet the dual challenges of feeding the population and preserving the planet. Sumitomo Corporation has taken a bold step into the future of animal nutrition, with a significant investment in Cyns, a Sao Paulo-based biotech firm that’s been pioneering the charge towards sustainable, insect-based feed solutions in Latin America. Lambarin Investimentos, a Brazilian family office and wealth management firm, has also joined the Seed Funding Round of this investment, one that is equal parts ambition, innovation, and the pursuit of a sustainable future by utilizing strategic alliances and vision.

?

To put it plainly, the parties involved are placing a calculated bet on the black soldier fly (BSF) – a creature small in size but enormous in potential – to revolutionize the feed industry, and to reimagine feed solutions in a world that can no longer afford to ignore the carbon footprint of its food supply chains.

?

Cyns stands out in the agtech landscape for being the first in Brazil to navigate the regulatory maze and emerge with approval for BSF-based ingredients, as well as its innovative approach to BSF farming. Nestled in Piracicaba, S?o Paulo, in the heart of Brazil’s agtech valley, Cyns has turned the country’s natural bounty—its climate and its copious amounts of sustainable food byproducts—into a competitive advantage. The company’s unique rearing system promises high bioconversion rates with minimal infrastructure, a testament to the kind of efficiency and sustainability that the future of feed production desperately needs.

?

“We are excited to support the accelerated growth and distribution of alternative feed ingredients needed for animal feeds in Latin America,” declared Jo?o Sim?es, Insect Protein Project Leader at Sumitomo Corporation do Brasil S.A. Sumitomo’s enthusiasm for this venture spotlights the broader implications for the feed industry in Latin America and beyond, engaging a sector ripe for disruption; traditional feed sources are now increasingly at odds with the pressing need for sustainability and reduced carbon footprints. To meet the challenge, Sumitomo is stepping into the ring as a strategic partner, ready to push the envelope in application development, R&D, and marketing of Cyns’ groundbreaking products.

?

With livestock and animal feed as one of the contributors to GHG emissions, this straightforward declaration underscores the critical intersection at which Sumitomo’s investment in Cyns stands—a juncture where business strategy meets global sustainability efforts. As ambitious as it is strategic, the investment in Cyns is set to propel the company into its next phase of growth. The blueprint includes a new BSF rearing facility capable of churning out 1,000 MT of BSF meal per year, a scale that speaks to the potential of this partnership to reshape the landscape of the feed industry.

?

“Brazil and South America are among the world’s largest livestock producers, those being aquaculture, swine, and poultry, plus Brazil is the third largest pet food market, making this a very sizable opportunity to attain such a goal,” Sim?es continued. Brazil is not just a country with the right conditions for BSF farming; it’s a powerhouse in the global livestock production scene, offering a vast market for sustainable feed solutions.

As Sumitomo and Cyns chart their course through this complex landscape, their journey offers a compelling glimpse into the potential for business to drive positive change, marrying the pragmatism of industry with the principles of environmental stewardship. This partnership is a beacon for the future, pointing towards a world where the feed industry can finally align with the sustainability goals that our environmental predicament demands and Sumitomo holds dear.
